The digital transformation of the energy sector has significantly increased the importance of cybersecurity in industrial environments. In this context, the BAQURA project emerges as a research initiative aimed at preparing technological infrastructures for a future in which quantum computing will play a significant role.
At CEGASA Energía, we participate in this project by contributing a use case based on our current devices, such as ECS systems. These devices are part of connected energy solutions and, as in many industrial environments, require secure communications to ensure data protection and the integrity of operations. Currently, these communications rely on traditional cryptographic algorithms that encrypt information and secure communication between devices.
However, the emergence of quantum computing introduces new challenges. Its enormous computational capacity could, in the future, compromise certain cryptographic algorithms used today. For this reason, the BAQURA project aims to investigate mechanisms that facilitate the transition from traditional cryptography to new security models capable of resisting attacks based on quantum technologies.
Among these solutions are post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and “quantum-safe” communication systems, such as virtual quantum key distribution (VQKD) approaches. The project analyzes how these technologies can be applied to key elements of the industry: industrial OT networks, IoT devices, industrial communication protocols, and 5G/4G networks.
For CEGASA Energía, this work is particularly relevant. Our energy storage solutions and associated systems operate in environments where communication security is essential. Participating in BAQURA allows us to explore how to progressively integrate these new protection technologies into our systems, ensuring operational continuity and information security.
Furthermore, one of the main challenges of the project is ensuring that this transition toward post-quantum security is compatible with existing infrastructures. The adoption of these new techniques must be carried out gradually, allowing current systems to evolve without compromising their operation.
Initiatives such as BAQURA help anticipate the technological challenges of the future and strengthen the resilience of strategic sectors such as energy. At CEGASA Energía, we remain committed to innovation and collaboration in projects that enable us to develop safer solutions, prepared for the technological challenges of the coming decade.
