Project INDSTORE: driving a competitive decarbonised industry

There is an urgent global need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to combat climate change. In response to this, Project INDSTORE was created: New technologies for a competitive and resilient industrial decarbonisation, based on the storage and smart management (AI) of energy.

A project led by CEGASA and co-funded by the Basque Government (Department of Economic Development, Sustainability and Environment) and the European Union, through the European Regional Development Fund 2021-2027 (ERDF).

The current state of affairs

In Spain, industry is one of the main contributors to carbon emissions, and while progress has been made in industrial decarbonisation, the current pace is insufficient to meet climate commitments and achieve climate neutrality by 2050, as required by the European Climate Law.

It is therefore critical that we drive the transition to a decarbonised and competitive industry through the research, development and application of battery energy storage technologies that minimise the impact of grid overload in response to the increased consumption that industrial electrification entails.

The INDSTORE project focuses on boosting the use of renewable energies in industry, highlighting the importance of energy storage systems as a key technology.

Objectives and milestones of the INDSTORE project

The main objective of this project is to drive the transition towards a decarbonised and competitive industry. To achieve this, we have focused on the research, development and application of battery energy storage technologies, together with smart management (AI) of energy.

Industrial electrification requires an appropriate infrastructure, and storage systems help to control energy transmission and distribution costs. They provide the flexibility required to manage variable renewable energies, reducing carbon emissions and optimising the efficiency of industrial processes.

However, there are still challenges related to security, connectivity and smart management. The INDSTORE project focuses on addressing and minimising these challenges so that these systems may be safely and effectively integrated into industrial applications.

This is a competitive industrial research collaboration project involving the following entities and/or agents of the Basque Science, Technology and Innovation Network: CEGASA ENERGIA, S.L.U., JEMA ENERGY, S.A., SMURFIT KAPPA NERVION, S.A., SUPSONIK, S.L., FUNDACIÓN TECNALIA RESEARCH&INNOVATION and IKERLAN S.COOP.
