Micro-networks
A microgrid is a self-contained electricity grid that allows you to generate your own electricity on site and use it when needed. Microgrids comprise low-voltage distribution systems together with distributed generation sources as well as storage devices.
The microgrid can be operated in either non-stand-alone or stand-alone mode. Unlike the grid, which generates electricity in a power plant, a microgrid generates electricity on site.
The backbone of a microgrid is the batteries, which allow to store surplus energy from generation and to supply it when grid demand increases or when generation stops, e.g. photovoltaics at night.
